1601: Essex’s rebellion

Ringleader: Robert Devereux, earl of Essex. Cause: Half-baked coup d’état against Elizabeth after Essex had fallen out of favour with the queen.

Elizabeth’s court also housed its share of foreign spies. The queen had her own network of spies in England and abroad, run by Sir Francis Walsingham. In a famous incident in May 1593, the poet and playwright Christopher Marlowe was killed in a pub brawl in Deptford, south London. A former spy, some people think he may have been bumped off because he knew too much.
